Right now, the second-year medical students are in the midst of studying for USMLE Step 1, the first part of our Board exams. We will be taking it at the end of April/beginning of May. This means that most days consist of studying. No classes, no tests, just studying. It’s a daunting task, and each person has a different way of doing it. Some of us prefer the early mornings for getting started, while others take time to sleep in and study later into the night. Some of us like studying at school, and others like being in the comfort of their own home.
We also all have different ways of staying encouraged during these weeks of studying: thoughts of post-exam plans, dinner with friends during the week, watching TV at night. For me, a calendar that keeps me on track each day has been helpful. At the top of the calendar, I have a few pictures of my family and friends as well as some quotes. I make sure I have it somewhere I can see it every day when I set up my study space. It’s a good way to remember that these few weeks are just that – a few weeks. While this test is a huge part of my life right now, it is only one step in the journey towards my career.
“Never regard study as a duty, but as the enviable opportunity to learn.”

I’m originally from Knoxville, TN, and found my way to South Carolina four years ago to pursue my undergraduate education at Clemson University. I graduated in May 2012 with a degree in Bioengineering, and I’m thrilled to be spending four more years in this area. I am passionate about USC School of Medicine Greenville’s commitment to community wellness and developing well-rounded doctors. I am excited to share this journey of our charter class with you.
